Prairie Dog Update

Greetings to all the regular shooters and new members of the OKC Gun Club.  This will be a brief refresher for the Prairie Dog Match at the Benchrest range for 2007.

Old man winter and the local weathermen have been spectacularly “both ends of the spectrum” this winter.  The match is on the calendar starting in March this year so let’s make believe the weather will co-operate!

A rundown on the classes:

Hunter: 9# (or less) production gun, any caliber, 6 power scope (variables turned down), shooting for score at 50,100, and 200 yards.  Sighters allowed but no scope changes while shooting for score.  Do it the old fashioned way…hold off for the shot. Bring your favorite hunter out and give it some exercise.

Varmint: 12# (or less), any caliber, any and all changes (bedding, barrels, triggers, stock, tuning) are okay.  Any scope shooting for score at 100, 200, and 300 yards.  Sighters allowed and scope adjustments while shooting for score are okay. Bring your best varmint rig and get better with it.

Unlimited: Designed for full blown bench rifles. Unlimited, any scope. Shoot ‘em if you got ‘em.  I don’t intend to be a “rule weenie”.  If you have a gun that is close to class bring it, shoot it, have fun, get better!

I have tried over the winter to obtain some targets with 12” bulls and scoring rings to try and start an iron sight hunter class but have been unsuccessful.  The standard military bolt target will work for 50 and 100 yards but is almost invisible at 200.

Anyone with suggestions??

The match will, as always, be held on the second (2nd) Saturday of each month.  For March and April let’s plan on starting at 9:00 am to give the temperature a chance to warm a bit.

I was down-range recently and found that the prairie dogs have been busy over the winter, lots of “eggs” for the shooting. For those new to this simple game, at the end of the match, if you choose, you can take one shot (one and only one), no sighters, no scope adjustments, no whining, no alibis, no nuthin, at a “prairie dog egg” at 300 yards.  The skillful shooter actually hitting the “egg” wins a supplemental cash prize. Some nice ice cream money to be had!

Same as last year, cost for the match is $5.00 per shooter and $2.00 in the pot for the “egg”.
